• Graduated from Davidson College with A.B. in History (1968)

• U.S. Army Officer, Armed Forces Courier Service, HQ-USAEUR (1968-70)

• Post Graduate work at University of Michigan (1970-71)

• Graduated from St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio Texas (1973)

• Clerked at Kaufman, Oberndorfer & Spainhour in Norfolk (1974)

• Law Clerk for Federal Court Judges Walter E. Hoffman & J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr. (1974-75)

• Associate Attorney for Rexford Cherryman (1975-76)

• Associate Attorney for Norris Halpern (1976-78)

• Appointed as Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Norfolk (1978) 

• Admitted to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court  (1979)

• President, Norfolk Rotary Club (1983-84)

• Appointed to Governor Charles Robb's Virginia State Commission on Child Support (1984)

• Appointed Assistant Attorney General in Norfolk (1986)

• Entered private practice (August of 1988)
